Julie Miller

Julie Miller, 71, died January 23, 2008, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Julie was born February 3, 1936, in Philadelphia to Harrison and Eleanor (Payne) Miller. She was a graduate of Friends Central High School in Philadelphia, Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire, Anchorage Community College and the University of Alaska Anchorage. Julie ventured to Alaska in the early 1960s and made it her home. She was first employed at the Alaska Native Hospital in Cordova as a medical technician. Several years later she moved to Anchorage, where she set up and ran labs for various doctors. In 1982, she decided she needed a change, and studied computer programming at Anchorage community College. With her honors degree, she was hired by U.S. Fish and Wildlife in Anchorage as an analyst and computer programmer. Julie retired from the federal government in 1994. Contributing both her time and her talents, Julie was involved with the local Habitat for Humanity. She was most dedicated to the Dimond West Little League organization, serving as coach, umpire and treasurer for many years. Each summer, she faithfully planted and maintained a vegetable garden. She is survived by her brother, David F. Miller of Media, PA; sister, Patricia M. Raff of Laporte, PA; and nephews, Matthew Miller, James Miller and John Ferguson.

Stanley Sierocinski

SIEROCINSKI, SR., STANLEY JOHN, 91, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Philadelphia. Born Dec. 24, 1916 in West Manayunk, PA, he was the son of John and Magdalena Sierocinski. He worked at Fred Whitaker & Company for thirty three years and retired from Tastykake. A lifetime resident of the Philadelphia area, he was the beloved husband of the late Mary Sierocinski; devoted father of Mary Ann (Sierocinski) Yeakel and was like a father to her dearly departed companion, Michael Gillam. He was the beloved grandfather of John R. Yeakel III and his wife, Regina; Gina (Yeakel) Bolli and Joseph Mark Sierocinski and great-grandfather of Amanda Bolli and Veronica & Frances Yeakel.

Peter Paul Recchia

Recchia, Peter P., 91, died Sunday April 13, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA. Born June 28, 1916 in New York City, NY the son of Vincenzo and Angela (Amanzio) Recchia, he was a Police Officer for the NYPD for 33 years. He was an officer in the PBA, a member of the Moose Lodge, a Scoutmaster in the Boys Scouts of America and an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his parents and by one daughter, Carol Recchia in 1998. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Recchia, now living in Philadelphia; by two daughters, Roberta Recchia Ranelli of Summit Point, WV and by Angel Recchia of Philadelphia, PA. He is also survived by a brother, John Recchia of Flushing, NY and by a sister, Laura Tamburino of Patchogue, NY and by two grandchildren, Michael Ranelli and Lisa Uzan.

J. Edward Shinn

SHINN, John Edward died April 20, 2008 at the age of 92. Ed was born on November 25, 1915 in Denver, Colorado, the only and beloved child of Hazel Taylor Shinn and John Vernon Shinn. The family moved to New York in 1931, where Ed was very active in YMCA athletic programs and graduated from Flushing High School. Ed attended Colgate University, subsequently transferring to Columbia University from which he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Ed served in the FBI during the war years, and attended Fordham University Law School, obtaining his JD and joining the New York Bar, specializing in Patent Law. Ed and his family relocated to Philadelphia in 1952 to join the law firm of Synnestvedt and Lechner, where he represented Pitcairn Company in a 28-year landmark case against the U.S. government for patent infringement. In 1969 Ed joined Pitcairn as General Counsel to continue the case against the U.S. government. Ed's commitment and perseverance eventually paid off when he tried and won for the plaintive before the Supreme Court of Claims in Washington, D.C. Subsequently, Ed became President of Pitcairn Company, from which he retired in 1985. Edward was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Margit Jensen Shinn. He was fortunate to remarry and is survived by his devoted wife of the last 20 years, Esther Freeh Shinn, his two daughters, Margit Shinn Donaldson of Chocowinity, North Carolina and Laurie Shinn Traficonte of Watertown, Massachusetts, his 7 grandchildren and his 4 great grandchildren. Ed always lived his long life with honor and integrity and will be sorely missed by his extended family and friends.

Karl Uhrmann, 97 of Philadelphia died Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Born August 30, 1910 in Philadelphia, he was a travel agent for many years. He is survived by three nieces and one nephew.

Erling "Wally" Sanborn Walseth

Erling Sanborn "Wally" Walseth passed away peacefully on April 25th 2008 at the age of 95 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Wally was born on February 21st, 1913, at the family home in Clear Lake, South Dakota. The second of four sons born to Grace Helen (Sanborn) Walseth and Einer Einerson Walseth, Wally graduated Valedictorian in Clear Lake High School's class of 1931. Among his classmates was Salutatorian Ruth Irene Woolworth, who eventually became his wife. Following high school, Wally obtained an undergraduate engineering degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings before pursuing his Master's in Civil Engineering at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Upon graduation, he worked first at Lockheed and then he moved to Mobil Oil where he stayed for more than 30 years. During World War II, Wally served in the Army Corps of Engineers where he was stationed in the South Pacific. He achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel and continued to serve in the Army Reserves. Once discharged from the Army, Wally returned to Mobil Oil where he worked until he retired. During his career the family lived in California, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Kansas. Wally eventually retired from the position of District Superintendant based in Casper, Wyoming. Ruth and Wally enjoyed an active retirement frequenting the golf course in Casper, hiking on Casper Mountain, skiing at Hogadon and traveling to visit grandchildren. Wally skied into his 80s, often bragging that he was the Oldest Man on the Mountain. Walseth is preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Ruth Irene (Woolworth) Walseth and his brother Tracy Sanborn Walseth; both were natives of Clear Lake, South Dakota. Surviving Wally are two brothers, Harvey Sanborn Walseth of San Diego, California, and Curtis Sanborn Walseth of Vancouver, Washington; the couple's two children, William David Walseth of Laramie, Wyoming, and Joan Walseth Purcell of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania; son-in-law Francis Jerome Purcell, Jr.; grandchildren Erin Purcell Hughes, Francis Jerome Purcell, III, and Andrew Walseth Purcell. Wally also lived to know five great-grandchildren: Vivienne Hughes, Liam Purcell (who predeceased him), Ruby Hughes, Dermot Purcell and Wren Purcell.
